Many go-karts take a number of basic precautions to comply with safety regulations (e.g.: installation of safety barriers, installation of safety guards on the karts, compulsory use of helmets, pre-race briefing, etc.). This set of precautions can be considered as preventive or passive protection. Pixelcom’s karting stop systems offer a significant increase in safety and a reduction of operating costs in your karting business. We tell you about it below!
Challenges in dangerous situations
What happens when you take a corner at high speed or lose control of the kart due to external factors (weather or other drivers)? In these cases, the physical integrity of the driver and other drivers can be at risk. This is where ACTIVE protections come into play.
What speed control and shutdown systems are there?
A kart speed control and shutdown system, is one of the best active protections and allows to have total control over the karts and of course over the drivers who drive them. They allow you to regulate the speed of the karts on the track in real time.
The system most commonly used by the majority of go-karts is a wireless control system that acts on the four-stroke engines (combustion engine karts) or electric engines (electric karts). This control and safety system consists of two basic devices:
- Speed/stop transponder connected to the ignition system (combustion engines) or to the control unit (electric engines).
- Remote control unit by means of which the track manager can control and adjust the speed of the kart when necessary.
How does a speed control system work?
There are three ways of using a speed control system and/or stopping the go-karts: manual, automatic or both.
Manual control
In a manual system, the track marshal has control of the speed of the karts at all times using the remote control knob. He can adjust the speeds of a driver, a group of drivers or all the karts. He can also impose penalties on drivers with inappropriate driving by limiting the speed of the kart for a certain period of time.
Automatic Control
In an automatic system, electromagnetic loops are used at specific locations on the circuit, such as:
- Pit/box entry: To ensure that karts enter at a reduced and safe speed.
- Dangerous areas: To reduce excessive speeds and increase safety.
Each loop has its own ID and can be set to be always active or receive instructions from the timing software.
Combination of both systems
Both systems, manual and automatic, can coexist to increase the safety of the karting circuit.
Innovations of our safety controls
Pixelcom has integrated speed/stop transponders in displays on the steering wheel of each kart. These devices:
- Limit the speed.
- Provide real-time race information.
- Include a HELP button so that drivers can alert the track marshal in case of emergency.
Integration with Timing Systems
Pixelcom’s speed and/or stop control system can be used in isolation or integrated with other timing systems. This allows to reduce the number of devices needed on the kart.
